work with durham21

durham21 is looking for enthusiastic, creative, reliable and ambitious people to join them in making durham21 the most exciting, dynamic, forward-thinking and on-the-pulse student website in the UK.

writing | editing | advertising | graphic design | web design | IT | accountancy | marketing | publicity

We are aware of the ever-increasing pressure on students to leave university not just with a solid degree, but also with a whole host of transferable skills. We aim to provide Durham students with the perfect opportunity to build, develop and apply a those skills by working with us on a constantly updated website.

We are currently looking at the possibility of linking with the government initiative Millennium Volunteers so that your work and skills are officially recognised in the form of a MV Certificate.

Be it web-design or journalism, advertising or fundraising, durham21 has something to help you to raise yourself above the crowd of 2:1 graduates.

durham21 - 21st century student life

writers
You don't have to know anything about journalism, or have edited a school newspaper. We are looking for people who can write thorough and well researched pieces in sassy, witty, stylish prose. You can write on anything; sports reports, features and interviews, reviews of films, books, CDs etc. If you'd like to become a regular writer or if you have an idea for a specific piece, then let us know.

editors
We're hoping to appoint editors to manage individual areas of the site i.e. going out, staying in, advisory centre etc. You'll be in charge of the content for your area, the updating of pages and managing the people who write those pages. You may be called upon to write yourself, and of course you'll have to edit the work of others.

advertising
This is a part of the site which we hope to rapidly develop this term. You'll be part of a team which designs advertising packages and then sells them to local and national businesses - and all profits going to DUCK.

graphic design and layout
Along with Photoshop, you'll have the chance to work with Adobe Indesign and Quark Express. You'll be responsible for laying out pages, designing images and editing photos and keeping the durham21 looking sharp, stylish and classy.

web design
Work with Adobe Photoshop & ImageReady, Macromedia Fireworks, Flash, Freehand and Dreamweaver Ultradev to add the necessary spice to the durham21 site. You'll also have the chance to show off your Java skills and nifty coding manoeuvres and have your input in how the design of the site develops.

IT
If you've some experience of IT and would like to develop your skills then durham21 can offer you the chance to gain working experience of HTML, ASP, CGI, web servers and database connectivity. Now, that's got to bolster any CV.

accountancy
Feeling the call of Arthur Andersen ? Why not work out if your really want to be an accountant by using Sage Instant Accounting 2000 to manage the durham21 accounts. With money coming in from advertisers and numerous internet affiliate programmes, we're hoping that you'll have your work cut out. You'll be working closely with DUCK - we'll need weekly updates on exactly how much money we've donated to them - so efficiency is essential.

marketing & publicity
We want durham21 to be a high-profile organisation within Durham, with reputation for professionalism, reliability and style. You'll be responsible for ensuring that we can create and maintain this reputation through advertising campaigns, organising events and selling our product to the people that matter.

what now ?
If you want to be a part of the team then just e-mail us at info@durham21.co.uk and we'll get back to you with all the information you need about where to go next.
