Bush on DVD

added 18.10.02 Bush: 1994//1999 DVD A DVD full of Bush bits, says Mike Haydock

Finally getting a UK release, this compendium of videos and extra tit-bits was initially launched elsewhere to coincide with Bush's 'The Science of Things' album. 3 years on and a much better album later ('Golden State'), this DVD is remarkably out of date; a resource to a past that America lapped up far more than the UK.

Revelling in the post-grunge success wave that followed Kurt Cobain's death, Bush slotted in nicely across the Atlantic while we were off to buy Blur and Elastica records. And despite a brief flurry in the charts here it seems they'll never really be welcomed back home with open arms.

'1994//1999' traces Bush's career very loosely indeed, mainly through their music videos which range from the gothic themed 'Little Things' to the self-indulgent mini-movie 'Greedy Fly'. 'Bonedriven', one of their simplest and best videos, is foolishly omitted though, and despite the miniscule documentary explaining the making of 'The Chemicals Between Us', there is not an ounce of director's comment to accompany each video.

Indeed, the lack of narration here or anywhere on the DVD has a severe distancing effect of watcher from watched. We learn little of the band themselves that we didn't already know; even the excerpts from the 'Alleys and Motorways' movie are hardly bonus material seeing as any true fan would have purchased the movie itself several years ago.

Having said that, the Woodstock '99 footage is complete and (relatively) fresh - for once you can enjoy a Bush gig without getting drenched in sweat and cheap beer. But then that's half the fun really... This DVD is worth your cash if you're a fan and if you haven't bought any previous Bush video releases. Unfortunately this won't include a huge number of people, especially in the UK. [***]
